Types Of Dental Whitening Treatment And Performance Vision Testing

By Kenneth Reed

Teeth may lose their original colour and sparkle even if a person brushes and flosses them every day. Teeth discoloration and staining may be caused by the food they eat; some, like tea and coffee contain a staining element called chromatin's. Smokers are more likely to have yellow teeth because of the nicotine in the tobacco. Other factors that may lead to teeth discoloration is age, injury to the mouth and some types of medication. There are two types of dental whitening methods a person can choose from as in the case of performance vision testing.

Normally, people use toothpaste that have an abrasive element to improve the colour of their teeth, others air polish them while others buy whitening products containing hydrogen peroxide. The above-mentioned solutions only work if the stains are on the surface of the teeth, otherwise alternative treatment solutions should be used. This type of whitening is called vital treatment.

Gel treatment may be performed at home or by a dentist in their office, it depends on the patient's preference. When performed at the dentist's office, powerful gels can be used and it takes less time, usually 30 minutes to 1 and a half hour every appointment, number of appointments range from one to three. The treatment time depends on the severity of the discoloration.

Those who don't want to sit in a dentist's practice during the whitening procedure may ask the dentist to give them a gel and custom-made mouthpiece so that they may perform the procedure at home. When they get home, they will wear that mouthpiece filled with the gel for some time every day until the colour of their teeth satisfy them.

Some whitening products can be bought over the counter for those who don't want to consult with a dentist. However, they take longer to whiten the teeth because they have a weaker whitening agent. Even mouthpieces can be bought over the counter, but they won't perfectly.

Discoloration and stains don't always come from the surface, sometimes they come from the inside. In this case, vital treatment will no longer be effective. So, non-vital treatment procedures should be adopted and they can't be performed at home. One example of this procedure involves filling each teeth with a whitening agent and covering it with a temporary fill. After the whitening agent has done its work, the temporary fill will be removed, this normally takes place after a few days.

Dental whitening procedures rarely cause severe side effects. However, a few of people who took the treatment may suffer from teeth sensitivity and gum irritation for a short while. Also, pregnant women are not allowed to whiten their teeth because they might be putting the life of their unborn baby at danger.

You might need to retake the whitening treatment after a year because it doesn't prevent your teeth from staining. That is if you stop smoking and limit chroming bearing food, otherwise you might need the whitening re-treatment sooner.
