Some Tips For Preparing A Southern Food

By Janet Kelly

Food from the south part of country are cooked fried traditionally with chicken being the meat that is chosen mostly. They were developed by Black Americans from the meals they made centuries ago when the slave trade was legal still. Because learning how to read and write were illegal for the slaves, their recipes were passed down orally until the emancipation.

People usually associate their meals as being greasy and unhealthy but this has been changed recently with new cooking techniques being adapted. You can even visit southern food Avon by the Sea to try these healthier options. Here are several tips you could follow in making your southern meal healthier and more nutritious.

Lighten the food up by using less oil or healthier alternatives like olive, canola or peanut oil instead of the hydrogenated fats. Soak in buttermilk first the chicken to increase its juiciness and cover them lightly with panko breadcrumbs and not double breading. Add not fat but flavor by mixing garlic powder as well as cayenne pepper to your breading.

You can then oven fry the chicken after and still get the same results of having a juicy and crispy meal without the extra calories. Choose vegetables and fruits in season because their flavors would be at their peak and could be tasted more if only half of salt and butter is used. Replace cream and butter with low fat milk and chicken broth for mashed potatoes.

Fruits and vegetables are abundant in southern area because of mild winters and hot summer climate resulting to longer seasons of growing. Their abundance throughout the year makes them ingredients for meals regularly. Using them more would make more healthful dishes specially when you follow the proper ways of preparing them.

In creating an instant stew, pair okra together with tomatoes, and roasting the sweet potatoes would bring its natural sweetness out while the flavor is enhanced with nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla. Saute greens with some garlic and some olive oil or cook them slowly in vegetables or chicken broth for adding a savory element. Hot peppers and red pepper flakes gives taste more when added.

Fruits are always a good choice for dessert though southerners usually do not directly eat them but are made to pies and cobbles and the popular choices are peaches and blackberries. Use vegetable oil in making them and use flour mixed with lemon juice instead of sugar. You could eat them with toasted silvered almonds, vanilla yogurt and grilled with honey.

Substituting meat is possible if you prefer not eating animals and tofu is the most commonly used substitution. But other alternative products are there such as veggie burgers or tempeh with more flavor compared to tofu. Beans and legumes are even among the favorites which are usable in recipes that imitates food based on meat.

Nondairy milk and butter versions are available for your vegan meal and the former is perfect for creamy recipes. The milk is from cashew, hemp, almond, soy and coconut which are dairy cream alternatives. When butter is needed, use nondairy versions or coconut oi.
