Simple Pastry Recipes In New England

By Linda Snyder

Some foods traditionally prepared today were made a long time ago in Europe. Today, most of those old recipes are adapted and changed, but some are still prepared as they were. Every region has its own tradition, and here you will find some of those really popular pastry recipes in New England that can be made really easily, and taste great.

Boston Cream Pie is one of those desserts that will make you forget about your diet, at least for a day. Simple, easy to prepare and delicious. So, for the cake, you need two eggs, separated, one and a half cup sugar, 2 1/4 cups cake flour, three table spoon of baking powder, one table spoon of salt, one third cup of vegetable oil, one cup of milk and one and half table spoon of vanilla.

Beat egg whites and gradually add 1/2 cup sugar. Combine all dry ingredients in one large bowl. Add sunflower oil, 1/2 cup of milk, and vanilla. Beat and gradually add the remaining milk and egg yolks. Carefully combine egg white mixture in. Bake in greased and floured cake pan or mold in moderate heated oven (350F) for maybe 20 minutes or so. Cool for a while and remove from your pan or mold.

For the cream, you will need 1/3 cup sugar, 3 tbsp. Of cake flour, a little bit of salt, 1 1/4 cups milk, 1 egg, 1 tbsp. Of butter and some vanilla extract. Combine sugar, flour, egg and salt. Gradually add milk and mix well. Cook over medium heat until it thickens, stirring constantly. Stir in butter and vanilla. Cover and let it cool. Slice cake in half, fill with cream filling, place the top back on the cake and finish with cooked chocolate glaze.

For preparing smooth chocolate glaze you need one and a half ounce of dark chocolate, one and a half cup powdered sugar, three tablespoon of water and one teaspoon of vanilla, as well as two tbs butter. Cook water and sugar, melt chocolate in it and add vanilla. Remove from the stow and mix in the butter. Pour this lovely mixture over your cake and let it cool.

Maple Apple Crisp is something you can make in no time at all, and you will love it. You just need to peel and slice four large apples, add four tbs lemon juice, 1/2 cup maple syrup and ground cinnamon, approximately one tea spoon. Let it all rest aside until you make the topping.

For the topping you will need 1 cup uncooked Quaker rolled oats, one third cup flour, half a cup sliced almonds, 2 table spoons vegetable oil, 2 table spoons maple syrup and 1 tea spoon almond extract. Mix topping ingredients all together and let them rest until your apples are baked.

You should preheat your oven first. Put prepared apple mixture in it. Cover everything and bake maybe 40 minutes. The apples should be soft by then. Then, cover them with prepared almond mixture and return everything in the oven, for another 30 minutes or so, or until the topping becomes crispy. This easy dessert combines perfectly with your favorite ice cream, as well as with vanilla ice cream.
