How The Bipolar Spouse Copes

By Laura Collins

Being bipolar is not much fun. Many people have a tough time with this, but a lot of people are able to lead successful lives. There are people who are happily married with children. In saying this, the bipolar spouse is someone who struggles a lot of the time because they feel that they have to be supportive and they are not doing enough for their partner.

The spouse will often become depressed and anxious, not knowing what to do in these types of circumstances. It is important for them to have support. It is not easy to manage this on their own. They need to have someone to talk to, but one needs to find a professional psychologist who deals in bipolar disorder as well as in marriage counseling. They will be more practical.

Research tells one that it is very possible to have a healthy relationship with a spouse that is bipolar. However, it is also something that you have to work on. It is not a piece of cake and one has to realize this from the start. This especially applies to the family where there are children in the home. They will have feelings of their own that become confusing, and they need to deal with this.

It can be more difficult for someone with bipolar disorder to get on with the average person. This is what the spouse has to realize. This is why the divorce rate is so high in a case like this, and for a marriage to be successful, one has to make the effort, making sure that they understand what is happening. They need to listen and be compassionate.

Often the spouse will become depressed as well. They need to learn more about the disorder and understand what their husband or wife is going though. This will help them to have more compassion and empathy. It will also help them to remain calm and realize that they will get over this phase. Sometimes it is a case of breathing and taking a step back when you find that you are going through a lot of stress.

There are different treatments available, and the spouse needs to make sure that the person with bipolar is getting all the help that they need. This may come in the form of psychologists or psychiatrists. They may need medication. The spouse is the person who can keep an eye on things, making sure that the treatment plan is going well and weather they need to make changes.

Couples may find that anger is a problem. The spouse can be sensitive to this, and this is where it becomes a problem. People with bipolar also take a lot of risks. This often leads to problems with drugs and alcohol. It is just one more problem to deal with. They may have other addictions, such as gambling or eating disorders. Obsessive compulsive disorder can also crop up.

You need to make sure that they are taking their medications. Someone like this often engages in risky behavior. This can include avoiding taking medication. One needs to keep an eye out for this.
