By Carolyn Brooks

Everywhere in the world the Islamic culture is infecting everyone and everything, including new words and phrases. Two such phrases that are becoming more salient in the Western World is halal and haram, basically meaning allowed and forbidden respectively. You may have seen halal MRE in stores or even online, or if you are in the military, may have seen some of your mates eating it. After seeing what it is, you are probably wondering what it is.

Food that is prescribed in a certain way of preparation by the Koran and overseen by a Muslim cleric or imam is food that is considered blessed or loosely termed as halal. In getting this food it is more than just putting a label on the bottle or package, for true Muslims will know its authenticity, as labels attesting to this kind of food will include sources of ingredients as well as modes of preparation until the final product.

In general this kind of food will not contain any pork or any preservatives sometimes such as MSG and neither will it have any blood or alcohol particles in it. Neither will this kind of food contain animal based gelatin in its production. Halal ingredients will most certainly include fresh items such as fruit and vegetables, grains and cereals, dairy products and select herbs and spices.

The food of today, including even fast foods and popular mainstream Western fare like pizza are now being prepared the this way to jump on the seeming bandwagon effect of people liking this food more as more convert to Islam as a way of life. It has also become a lucrative business of selling this kind of prepared food. Most will say however, that with the move towards this kind of preparation, it will make food more expensive.

As this trend has affected mainstream food it has also affected other items for commercial use such as cosmetics and even clothing. In addition it has also affected such activities such as tourism even, where the distinction is seen in hotels not serving alcohol or forbidden foods, separate facilities for men and women and so on and so forth.

This trend has also affected the way the United States military operates, especially in the way that it prepares Meal Ready to Eat packs prepared in this method. Theoretically in the end, you will be getting to eat something that is healthier, but likewise something that also costs a bit more, due to increased time to prepare amongst other things.

For those using the MRE prepared the halal way, most attest that it is healthier than the regular MRE. As these preparations lack MSG, asparteme, trans fats, sucralose and other high fat content ingredients. In theory the soldier will be less fatigued and jumpy due to the healthier product.

In the end it is really up to you to try this kind of MRE and see if you like it or not. Remember however, that sometimes they cost anywhere form 10 to 30 percent more than the regular MRE.
