Ways To Treat Neck And Shoulder Pain Edmonton

By Brenda Warner

When one experiences neck and shoulder pain, it can be debilitating to the extent that one is debilitated. One will not be able to work or carry out simple daily chores. Such pains are caused by many things, including sitting at the same place with the same posture for a long time. Stress is one of the commonest causes of these pains. It comes when an individual worries too much or over-thinks. The stress is manifested as pain at the shoulders or neck. When considering neck and shoulder pain Edmonton residents need to know what causes it and how to go about it.

When one stays in the same position for a long time, like spending a lot of time before the computer or spending the entire day in front of the office desk, such pains may result. When the same position is held for a long time, muscles in the affected areas get stiffened, with their fibers getting tight. There is also the case in which one sleeps in an uncomfortable position for a long period of time. Injuries to the shoulder and neck also play a role.

When one experiences these pains, one of the first things to do is to determine if it is as a result of poor positioning. In the event that the pain is only slight, resting or applying some heat or ice on the area may suffice. There is also the option of using over the counter drugs. If the pain continues in such cases, professionals should be contacted.

The pains can also be cured using breathing exercises. Stress in most parts of the body is reduced when one focuses on exhaling rather than inhalation. Through complete exhalation, carbon dioxide in the lungs is reduced, leaving more space for oxygen. In order to extend the exhalation, you are advised to speak quietly while counting to 10. This is done repeatedly until one runs out of air. With this exercise, air should not be forcefully pushed.

In order to relieve tension within muscles, the tension must be felt. One will be required to place their palm at the back part of the neck and then tighten neck muscles. One way to achieve this is through jutting the chin forward. One is required to hold for about two seconds before the head is returned to its normal position.

One will need to focus on the muscles that have just been tightened before lifting the back of the head off the shoulders. More attention will need to be given to the tight muscles so that they release. The process is repeated in the morning and also evening until you get relief.

There is use of simple techniques such as massage, heat therapy and stretching exercises. For individuals suffering from tense shoulder muscles, there might be pain when massage is done. If the tension loosened using gentle heat prior to massage, pain will be eased.

Ultimately, when one is working towards easing pain in these areas, the treatment is ongoing and will require them to strive to keep the muscles loose. The pains can be permanently cured through stretching, massage and exercises. Some conditions require the use of a combination of methods.
