By Roger Jones

If you are trying to be more healthy one of the best ways to do so is by improving your diet. Vegetables such as squash can add a lot of great flavor, fiber and vitamins to your diet. The key is to pick recipes that use these ingredients in ways that your family will enjoy. Here are tips that you can use when looking at spaghetti squash recipes in order to find ones that suit your family's tastes.

This vegetable has bright yellow or orange flesh that looks like spaghetti noodles, which is where it got its name. It is highly nutritious which is great for kids and low in calories which makes it good for people who are watching their weight. Best of all, it can be added to many meals which is a benefit if your children do enjoy eating it.

Make sure to keep it in a cool place so it stays good for as long as possible. You will want to cook it before using it most recipes. Check the instructions of existing recipes in order to tell how they prepare it in it's raw state. Then, once you have it so that it is ready to use you can begin to get creative.

When you first start thinking about what to make and looking for recipes you may be amazed at the range of possibilities that are available. Narrowing down what you want to make and then finding a recipe for that type of dish may be a good first start. Of course, making sure that you pick recipes that have ingredients that are easy to find or that you already have on hand.

You may want to think about whether you want to serve the squash as the main part of the meal or if you want one that is served on the side along with another dish. A main course recipe will likely be heavier and more filling. A recipe that is being presented along with other food items will often be lighter which may make it more appealing for many people. A good main dish might be to use the squash like you would it's pasta equivalent and top it with sauce of some sort.

While most people think that this vegetable should only be eaten at supper this is not the case. There are breakfast dishes that use eggs, cheese and other ingredients that would be great as part of a brunch. You can also make a salad out of the squash by adding other vegetables which is an ideal lunch that won't cause you to tip the scales afterwards.

Some people want to find vegan recipes. In this case, you will need to pay special attention to other ingredients as items like cheese may be off limits. If you like Indian food, try adding curry or other spices to your squash for a great meal with no animal products involved

If you have your squash and are ready to start using it then it is time to look for recipes. Most cookbooks will have at least one of them in the vegetable section but if you want more variety you can always look online.
