Many American doctors who studied in Germany during the twentieth century are responsible for introducing this practice in the United States. They brought the knowledge to America after the studies.

Often, people confuse internists with interns because of the closeness in spelling and pronunciation of the two terms. However, the two are very different on a number of levels. Internists are medical practitioners who have completed postgraduate training and can act as primary care physicians. On the other hand, interns are doctors, but in their first year of residency. In official capacity, the use of the name intern has been dropped.

The training and career path of internists varies a lot from one country to another. Internists in different countries are required to achieve different levels of education and training in order to practice in this field. In general, however, One must attain a bachelor degree, medical degree, and residency in order to qualify. Seeking licensure and certification is only allowed after having those qualifications. It typically takes four years to complete medical school.

One can attend fellowship programs to be further specialized. One may specialize in any of the subspecialties in the field. Specialization depends on personal abilities, skills, and interests. Practitioners are allowed to specialize in multiple subspecialties. All they have to do is to attend respective fellowship programs. Most practitioners however, settle for a single subspecialty and try to enhance their level of knowledge through further research and reading.

Internists have wide and diverse responsibilities in their line of work. First, they treat internal disorders including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and many other medical conditions. Besides treating, they also analyze test results, reports, and records related to patient information. They perform diagnosis based on examination information. These doctors also administer medicine and prescribe therapy, medication, and other forms of medical care.

In the United States, trained internists are certified by three major bodies, that is, BCIM, AOBIM, and ABIM. Certification is based on many aspects including the attitudes, skills, and knowledge of the individual. Once certified, the internist is given a license to practice in the specific state the license is issued. Licenses need to be renewed regularly to remain valid.

There are a lot of skills and abilities needed to make a good internist. These practitioners work day and night under a lot of pressure. They mostly work in a medical setting such as a hospital. The amount of income one gets depends on factors like experience, location, employer, education, and specialization.
