PFLAG LGBTQ Parent Support San Rafael CA

By Frank Evans

Originally founded in 1972 by Jeanne Manford whom marched in the New York City's Christopher Street Liberation Day March of the same year, the supportive mother of a gay son had no idea how much larger the organization would become over the years. For, the numerous lives which PFLAG has touched has now helped to create new LGBTQ Parent support san rafael ca and elsewhere.

The current vision of the organization is the same as it has always been, to envision a world in which all aspects of diversity are celebrated while accepting others regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation or gender expression. For, while progress has been made in some of these areas, there are still those whom are trying to repeal laws which protect LGBTQ+ community members at home, work and play. As such, the mission to help create a world in which all people love and respect others regardless of difference still remains a viable and challenging goal.

In most cases, the organization works to help families, friends and allies of those whom are in need of assistance when it comes to accepting, supporting and understanding the lifestyle of those closest to them. Whether through telephone hotlines, online outreach or peer-to-peer meetings, the group offers programs and resources which are generally unavailable elsewhere.

With over 400 hundred chapters currently providing this type of support, education and advocacy, the group has helped thousands upon thousands of families and individuals whom identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. In addition, there are now chapters either in or close to most major American cities. Whereas, if there is not a chapter, individuals can go online to the PFLAG website to locate the nearest support group or online assistance with a specific issue or issues.

Since 1972, PFLAG has been changing and strengthening the lives, minds and hearts of individuals whom originally had difficulty accepting family members or friends involved in the LGBTQ+ community. In one case, the organization offers support groups which can help individuals by networking with others of like-mind and lifestyles. The latter of which can often help individuals feel more accepted while providing the understanding that no one is ever truly alone in the world.

While most visible during national pride month in June and at pride parades around the nation, the overall purpose of the group goes far beyond marching in Pride parades. For, the group advocates at the federal, local and state level for the equality of all LGBTQ people and families. For, only then can all people begin to live, pray, play, study and work in a safe environment.

The group has always played a vital role in the LGBTQ+ community. While this is the case, that need has only continued to grow over the last several decades. For, there are now more religious organizations and zealots discriminating against these individuals than ever before in history.

While PLFAG has always played a vital role in the overall community at large, there is still more work to be done. In fact, the need for the organization has grown even stronger over the last several decades. One other reason the work is so important now more than ever is due to the right wing religious zealots which are attempting to overturn new laws protecting the civil and legal rights of those in the LGBTQ+ community.
